MIDDLETOWN
Written by WILL ENO
Middletown is a deeply moving and funny play that explores the universe of a small American town. As a friendship develops between longtime resident John Dodge and new arrival Mary Swanson, the lives of the inhabitants of Middletown intersect in strange and poignant ways in a journey that takes them from the local library to outer space and points between. This production was the play's UK premiere.
The show's designer, Asa Norling, and I, decided to pursue an ever-so slightly heightened 1978-1980 Middle-America visual world, inspired by film, tv, and photography (especially William Eggleston) from the era, inventing fictional company logos for objects and items of clothing.
